I find this topic very interesting as I fall into this 懶音 catogery. I came from a "seldom-speaking Cantonese” background. Therefore my pronounciation when I sing CO is just funny. My sifu said I am just like a gwaipo singing 粵曲. However, I must say I have improved a lot with proper guidance and self-conscious of the correct pronounciation. As they say, when there is a will there is a way, agree Sam？  |

Thanks for your help re this topic. 
I find it difficult to differenciate between N & L in Cantonese words myself sometimes. Therefore I always refer to the dictionary. e.g 男、女、 南. Too many people pronounce them with L sound and we all seem to have accepted them. |

of course la Mulan,
it is good of you to accept others suggestion and put to correct the 'fault'
if you try to correct it in your everyday usage then when come to singing the correct pronounciation will come as second nature. |

tks for your advice. By the way, when you said 'of course la' you sounded just like us (my countrymen). Didn't know you (Hongkee??) also speak like that lah!!

For quick and easy reference, I recommend this:

I like it because it comes with the "sound" and English reference of the word.
You do have to be able to write in the Chinese word to use it though, I think.
Other members may have other suggestions. |

mulan, i am proud to be a hongkong person. And talking la this and la that make me feel 'close' to fellow HK people. We are not writing anything serious. So ok lor!!!
by the way i only know Cantonese and English. IN English i cannot recall any words that start with ng...., even in Mandarin. So what we call 'lazy' in Cantonese maty not be lazy at all. Rather we should call those word starting with ng..'hard-working' words. Lazy words may just be the norm!!!! |

"n" 屬鼻音聲母, "l" 則屬舌邊音聲母, 前者是以鼻音起聲, 後者是以舌尖輕觸上顎前部起聲。
粵語 "n"、"l" 不分的現象頗為普遍, 例子還有: 南(n)/藍(l)、年(n)/連(l)、嬲(n)/褸(l),農(n)/龍(l) ...., 通常是把 "n" 唸成 "l" 。在現實中, 很多人唸 "n" 聲母字時只保留微弱的鼻音。
唱粵曲講究字正、露字, 所以應把兩個聲母分清。老師會教學生, 唱 "l" 聲母的字時, 先把舌頭前伸, 唱 "n" 聲母的字時則注意發鼻音, 刻意一點也無妨, 這樣才會露字。
